Responsible Business
Following devastation by fire of our laundry facility in 2021, we took it as a sign to move forward with a renewed focus on becoming a truly responsible business, adopting sustainability wherever possible.
We engaged Kannegiesser UK to support the multi-million pound refurbishment resulting in some of the most innovative technology being installed.
“In this regard Kannegiesser is increasingly seen as the Technical Partner, who responsibly designs complete laundry solutions and further develops a unique structure, which eventually elevates machinery systems to their highest efficiency and availability. At Kannegiesser we intend to challenge ourselves increasingly in this regard.” Kannegiesser UK
And this is an ethos shared by Royal Jersey Laundry...
We’ve come a long way since Walter Westcott hand washed laundry in his bathtub, and that includes the UK’s first Quantex Linen Scanner - capable of scanning both sides of the laundry item for dirt and stains, and the top-range 3-roll ironing line with advanced EMQ feeder, folder and camera scanner, both supplied by Kannegiesser.
All this technology is wonderful for making our service more efficient and secure, but we are aware that a commercial laundry service is undoubtedly a high user of energy, which is why we trust our suppliers with the provision of technology to support our sustainable development goals.
For example, our three continuous batch washers process 50kg of linen per minute and uses 85% less water than conventional commercial washer extractors.
Speaking of water usage...
Royal Jersey Laundry have its own water recovery unit capable of providing c20,000 litres of water per day which makes a remarkable difference to the impact on the local water supply
The on-site water recovery plant also means we can recycle 80% of our water, and since the temperature drop is minimal we use significantly less energy to heat it up, reducing our carbon footprint by 600 tons per year.
We are voluntary members of the UK Government’s Climate Change Agreement scheme
A commitment from energy-intensive sectors such as us to set and reach for pre-determined energy efficient targets.
General Manager, Barry attends regular meetings at Westminster discussing priorities for those targets.
We are also proud to report on our sustainability achievements using established platforms such as Ecovardis and CDP as well as the new GLARE platform specifically designed for laundries.
As an SME, sustainability is at the forefront of what we do when approaching our decision making. That’s why we’ve made substantial investments in our operations, including over £8 million in our plant.
Included in this investment and installed December 2024, our new solar power project capable of reducing our electrical demand by at least 8%, which will reduce our carbon footprint even further.
