The story of one hundred years of laundry

Our Story

From Walter’s donkey to Chris’ ergonomic epoxy resin floor

Back in 1914, Walter Westcott lost a finger in an accident at the factory he then worked at. This rendered him incapable of taking any part in the First World War, and so he set his mind to industry at home.

A short time later in the following year, Walter set up a small domestic laundry service, collecting washing from locals in the town where he lived, using nothing but his reliable donkey and cart – he named it Essex County Laundry Limited. He would launder the loads in his bath tub at home, and deliver the clean washing, dried and neatly folded, quickly becoming a stalwart service provider to the town.

In the following years, Walter grew his one-man, one-donkey business into a small empire comprising eight brands, six factories and many shops across London.

World War II brings disaster

Having survived one world war, it was the second that saw the laundry’s mettle truly tested, with the land mine-style bomb dropped by parachute directly on ‘Westcott’s Laundry’ in October 1940.

With 70,000 pieces of laundry to process, the wartime spirit of ‘keep calm and carry on’ proved it’s worth and on they pressed, if you’ll pardon the pun.

So successfully in fact that in the early 1990’s Walter’s son, Donald was enlisted as company director to take over the company and introduced his son, Chris as manager.

This pairing saw the greatest changes and developments of the laundry’s life, adding further company directors, managers, engineers and launderers to grow the business into the dynasty it is today.

Disaster strikes again on May 20th 2021

The fire ripped through the laundry facilities, virtually gutting the site and rendering the business seemingly doomed. The country was still reeling from the devastating effects of the Covid-19 pandemic and the by now chairman, Chris and his right-hand man, Managing Director, James Lincoln felt responsible for the livelihoods of the Royal Jersey Laundry team members.

Barry Quinn, the General Manager recalls ‘feeling physically sick’ as he watched the business literally and figuratively burn to the ground, suffering shock at the perceived, and un-justified blame for letting his staff down.

James however, soon arrived with his naturally calming demeanour and practical personality to help focus on what was to be done to save the business and protect the staff.

Industry support at this point was second to none, with contemporaries immediately pulling together to provide vital backing.

This enabled Royal Jersey Laundry to continue serving their clients as they worked through the night to launder linens for the luxury hotels of London, proudly without any impact to the service standards or client numbers.

James recalls that while the building itself was un-salvageable,

‘much of the Royal Jersey memorabilia was rescued from the fire, and the framed photograph of Walter was eerily untouched, as if he was urging the business to continue.’

Chris says of the time, friends and acquaintances asked him why he would rebuild the business rather than collect the insurance money to provide a different life for himself and his family. And speaking of family he said,

‘I have never let anyone down. It’s not about money anyway but continuing the family business and sticking with the standards of my grandfather. What would I do with the rest of my life?’

One year later, almost to the day on Saturday 14th May 2022, the first shift on the brand new Royal Jersey site began.

James Lincoln and the Royal Jersey Laundry team continue to uphold those stalwart standards of the business today, embracing sustainability and technology,  with that auspicious photograph watching over them, and a brand new epoxy resin floor beneath.
